Langstane is a Bronze Age standing stone situated in Caithness, northern Scotland. The monument comprises a single upright stone, positioned 40 metres south of a reference point now lost to local memory. It rises from bedrock of Middle Old Red Sandstone, a formation of conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone and mudstone dating to the Middle Devonian period, which provides the underlying geology throughout this region. The Caithness landscape of moorland and peat has preserved many such stones from the Bronze Age, when communities erected standing stones for purposes connected to ritual, territorial marking, or astronomical observation.
Langstane is protected by Historic Environment Scotland as a scheduled monument under reference SM501, recognition of its archaeological significance. The stone stands as evidence of Bronze Age settlement and ceremonial practice in the far north of Scotland. Though isolated today, it would originally have formed part of a wider ritual landscape, one of numerous monuments that Bronze Age peoples distributed across the Caithness hills and coastal plains during the second millennium BCE.
