Lexden Dyke Middle is a linear earthwork forming part of the Iron Age and Romano-British defences of Camulodunum, located near Colchester in Essex. The dyke comprises a substantial bank and ditch system that formed one element of the territorial boundaries and fortifications surrounding this important oppidum and later Roman town. Dating principally to the late Iron Age, with subsequent Roman-period modification and use, the earthwork represents the scale of engineering undertaken to demarcate and defend the settlement's approaches. The surviving earthwork remains a significant archaeological witness to the strategic importance of Camulodunum as a major power centre during the transition from Iron Age to Romano-British Britain.
