Lexden Dyke Middle is a linear earthwork forming part of the defensive perimeter of Camulodunum, the Iron Age oppidum and later Romano-British town located near Colchester in Essex. The dyke system, constructed during the Late Iron Age, comprises a series of parallel banks and ditches that enclosed a substantial territorial settlement. Lexden Dyke Middle represents one section of this extensive network of fortifications, which underwent modification and continued use following the Roman conquest of Britain in 43 AD. The earthwork survives as an upstanding archaeological monument reflecting the sophisticated engineering and territorial control exercised by the Late Iron Age polity that occupied the site.
