Overview

History & significance

Lion Point decoy is a duck decoy located approximately 810 metres south-east of Cockett Wick Farm near the Essex coast. The site represents the remains of a small enclosed waterfowl trap, characteristic of the decoy systems that were constructed and operated in England from the seventeenth century onwards to capture wild ducks and other wildfowl for food and profit. The decoy at Lion Point, like others of its type, would have consisted of a pool with associated pipes or channels designed to funnel birds into confined areas where they could be netted. Such facilities were particularly prevalent in East Anglia and Essex during the early modern period and remained in use throughout subsequent centuries.
