History & significance

Lion Point decoy is a duck decoy pond situated in Essex, England, approximately 810 metres south-east of Cockett Wick Farm. The site dates from the early modern period and represents the remains of a decoy system, a hunting apparatus that exploited waterfowl behaviour through the use of carefully engineered ponds and funnel-like channels. Duck decoys were commercial operations that became particularly prevalent in England from the seventeenth century onwards, serving as important sources of fresh meat and feathers for both domestic consumption and trade. The physical character of Lion Point decoy comprises the characteristic earthwork features typical of such installations, though its current condition reflects considerable changes to the landscape since its period of active use.
