Martello tower E is a circular defensive tower built during the Napoleonic Wars in the early nineteenth century as part of the coastal defence system protecting Essex from potential French invasion. Constructed of brick and standing approximately forty feet in height, the tower features the characteristic squat, robust design of Martello fortifications, with thick walls and a flat roof originally mounted with a gun emplacement. Located near Clacton-on-Sea on the Essex coast, this tower forms part of a chain of similar structures erected between 1808 and 1812 along the vulnerable southeastern shoreline of England. The tower represents an important survival of early nineteenth-century military engineering and reflects the strategic concerns of the Napoleonic period.
