Martello tower E is a coastal defence fortification constructed during the Napoleonic Wars period in the early nineteenth century. Located at Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, it forms part of the chain of Martello towers built along the English coast between 1803 and 1812 as a precaution against French invasion. The tower is a circular or polygonal structure characteristic of its type, designed to provide gun emplacements and garrison accommodation in a compact defensive form. It remains a significant example of early nineteenth-century military architecture and represents an important phase in British coastal fortification strategy during the Napoleonic conflict.
