Llanquian Castle is a motte and bailey earthwork located in Glamorgan, Wales, and represents a typical example of early Norman defensive settlement in the region. The monument consists of a substantial mound with an associated bailey enclosure, a fortification type common to the period following the Norman Conquest of England and the subsequent penetration into South Wales during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The site demonstrates the strategic use of elevated positions and earthwork construction favoured by Norman settlers establishing control over newly conquered Welsh territories. As a scheduled ancient monument under Cadw's stewardship, Llanquian Castle remains an important archaeological record of the military and colonial infrastructure deployed during the medieval conquest and settlement of South Wales.
