History & significance

Llantwit Major Monastic Settlement is a site of a major early medieval monastic community located in the Vale of Glamorgan, south Wales. The settlement was founded in the sixth century and developed as one of the most important religious centres in early medieval Wales, with significant scholarly and ecclesiastical influence extending beyond its immediate region. The site comprises the remains of monastic buildings, including a church and associated structures, along with evidence of occupation and activity spanning the early medieval and medieval periods. Llantwit Major served as both a centre of learning and a focus for Christian life, with the monastery maintaining connections to other religious communities and playing a key role in the Christianisation of the surrounding landscape.
