Martello tower at Felixstowe Ferry is a circular brick-built fortification constructed during the Napoleonic Wars in the early nineteenth century as part of the extensive coastal defence system protecting eastern England against potential invasion. The tower stands approximately forty feet in height and features the characteristic design of Martello towers with thick walls, a gun platform mounted on the roof for artillery, and casemented gun positions, typical of the more than one hundred examples erected along the English coast between 1803 and 1812. Built on the Suffolk coast at a strategically important location overlooking the River Deben estuary, the tower exemplifies the military engineering response to the Napoleonic threat during the Peninsular War period. The structure has been designated as an ancient monument recognising its significance as a surviving example of early nineteenth-century military architecture and coastal defence strategy.
