Martinlee Plantation enclosure is a post-medieval settlement earthwork located in Roxburghshire, south-east Scotland. The site sits upon sandstone, siltstone and mudstone bedrock of the Inverclyde Group, which provides a moderately stable foundation for the low-lying pastoral landscape in which it stands. The enclosure itself, positioned 140 metres north of Martinlee Plantation, comprises the earthen remains of field boundaries and associated structures typical of the early modern Scottish Borders region, when farming communities reorganised their lands into more defined parcels.
The monument reflects the agricultural intensification that followed the Union of Crowns in 1603, when cross-border raiding diminished and investment in improved farming practices became viable. Post-medieval enclosures of this character rarely survive as upstanding features; their preservation here suggests the site may have been abandoned or transformed before major modern land improvement obliterated such traces.
The enclosure is protected as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland under reference SM6636, recognising its archaeological and historical significance as evidence of rural settlement and land use in the early modern Borders.
