McCulloch's Castle is an Iron Age fort situated in Arbigland, Kirkcudbrightshire, occupying sandstone bedrock of the Border Group. The fort represents a defensive settlement from the pre-Roman Iron Age, a period when fortified sites served as territorial centres and refuges across Scotland. Its location on the Meramecian sandstone geology typical of south-west Scotland would have provided a naturally defensible position with good visibility across the surrounding landscape.
