Meall Odhar is a shieling ground located 640 metres north-north-west of a named location in Perthshire, Scotland. The site lies on bedrock of the Argyll Group, a Neoproterozoic sequence of metamorphic rocks comprising psammite, semipelite and pelite. This ancient geology provided a stable foundation for the seasonal pastoral settlement.
Shielings were temporary settlements used by communities moving livestock to upland summer pastures, a practice fundamental to Highland and Island economies from at least the medieval period through to the eighteenth century. The high-altitude location on Meall Odhar would have offered suitable grazing for cattle and sheep during the warmer months, when families established encampments to make butter and cheese whilst herds fed on the hills.
The monument is protected by Historic Environment Scotland under the scheduling reference SM10414, recognising its significance as evidence of traditional pastoral land use. The survival of physical remains at Meall Odhar contributes to understanding of shieling settlement patterns across the Perthshire uplands and the archaeological record of seasonal transhumance in Scotland.
