Motte castle adjacent to Oaklands Hall, Chirk Bank is a Norman motte-and-bailey castle situated in Shropshire. The monument consists of a substantial earthen mound typical of early medieval fortifications erected following the Norman Conquest of 1066. The motte would originally have supported a timber or stone tower commanding the surrounding landscape, whilst the accompanying bailey provided an enclosed defensive space. Such castles were characteristic of Norman settlement and military strategy in the Welsh borderlands during the eleventh and twelfth centuries.
