Overview

History & significance

Newhouse is a Post-Medieval homestead and field system situated approximately two hundred metres south of the settlement of Newhouse in Shetland, Scotland. The site comprises the remains of a domestic dwelling and associated agricultural landscape typical of Post-Medieval settlement patterns in the Northern Isles, reflecting the period of intensified land use and reorganisation that characterised Shetland from the sixteenth century onwards. The field system demonstrates the development of managed arable and pastoral agriculture during this era, when Shetland's economy increasingly focused on small-scale farming combined with fishing and other activities. The homestead and its surrounding fields form part of the broader archaeological evidence for how rural communities organised their settlements and cultivated their landscape during the Post-Medieval period.
