No 1 Battery, Stokes Bay Lines is a mid-nineteenth-century coastal defence fortification located on the Hampshire coast near Gosport. Constructed as part of the extensive Palmerston fortifications programme of the 1860s, the battery formed part of an integrated defensive system designed to protect Portsmouth Harbour and the naval dockyards from potential French invasion. The structure comprises earthwork fortifications with gun emplacements built to accommodate modern rifled artillery of the period. The site represents an important surviving example of Victorian military engineering and coastal defence strategy during a period of significant technological change in warfare.
