Overview

History & significance

Offa's Dyke: Section South of Brymbo Colliery is a linear earthwork monument forming part of the extensive frontier defence constructed during the reign of King Offa of Mercia in the late eighth century. This section of the dyke, located in Denbighshire, Wales, comprises an earthen bank and ditch that runs across the landscape south of Brymbo Colliery, representing the western boundary of the Mercian kingdom established between approximately 757 and 796 AD. The monument survives as a substantial earthwork despite later disturbance from industrial activity in the area, retaining archaeological and historical significance as evidence of Anglo-Saxon territorial control and engineering capability. The preservation of this section contributes to the understanding of Offa's Dyke as a whole, one of the most ambitious public works of the Anglo-Saxon period, stretching approximately 150 miles along the Wales-England border.
