Overview

History & significance

Osney Abbey is a ruined Augustinian house founded in 1129 by the Norman knight Robert d'Oilly in the parish of Osney, Oxford. The abbey was one of the most significant religious institutions in medieval Oxfordshire, possessing considerable lands and exercising substantial influence throughout the region until its dissolution in 1540. The surviving remains comprise fragmentary stone foundations and walls scattered across the site, which testify to the former scale of the monastic complex, though much was destroyed or dismantled following the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The abbey's architectural remains and its documented history as a major medieval foundation make it an important witness to the role of Augustinian monasticism in medieval England.
