Oyster Midden is a Mesolithic midden located in the Ards peninsula, County Down, Northern Ireland. The site preserves evidence of early postglacial settlement and subsistence practices, with concentrations of oyster shells indicating sustained exploitation of shellfish resources. Dating from the early Mesolithic period, the midden represents the dietary remains of hunter-gatherer communities who occupied this coastal landscape approximately 9,000 years ago.
The monument lies upon Early Carboniferous limestone bedrock interspersed with claystone and siltstone, geology that would have shaped both the availability of marine resources and the accessibility of the shoreline in prehistory. The limestone substrate provides a relatively stable foundation for shell preservation, and the nearby coastal waters would have supported productive oyster beds exploitable from the contemporary shoreline.
Oyster Midden is now protected by the Historic Environment Division under reference 13507. As one of relatively few recorded Mesolithic shell middens in Northern Ireland, the site contributes significantly to understanding the maritime economy and settlement patterns of early postglacial communities in the Irish Sea zone. The survival of organic material within the midden deposits offers potential for reconstructing ancient diet, seasonality and exploitation strategies.
