The site is defined principally by linear and enclosing features created through the digging and arrangement of pits, a method of marking territorial and domestic boundaries characteristic of early modern rural settlement in south-west Scotland. The underlying bedrock of Portpatrick and Glenwhargen Formation wacke, dating from the Caradocian period, would have presented a challenging substrate for construction, likely influencing the practical choice of pit-defined boundaries over more labour-intensive stone or timber structures.
