Pinkiehill is a post-medieval field system located in Midlothian, Scotland, situated approximately 300 metres south of Pinkie. The monument comprises the surviving earthwork remains of agricultural organisation from the early modern period, when the landscape was being systematically divided and managed for cultivation and stock-rearing. Such field systems represent the practical response of farming communities to the demands of intensified land use during the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries.
The site lies upon bedrock of the Scottish Coal Measures Group, Moscovian in age, which comprises mudstone, siltstone and sandstone interspersed with coal seams, ironstone and ferricrete deposits. This geological foundation shaped both the character of the land and the agricultural potential that drew investment in field systems during the post-medieval period.
