History & significance

Prehistoric cairnfield south west of Water Crag is a Bronze Age monumental landscape located in the upland terrain of western Cumberland, comprising a dispersed grouping of burial cairns and associated archaeological features. The site occupies rough moorland at approximately 290 metres north west of the confluence of Linbeck Gill and Devoke Water, an area that would have served as pastoral or ritual territory during the second millennium before the Common Era. The cairns themselves represent the funerary and ceremonial practices of Bronze Age communities, with individual monuments constructed from stone gathered from the surrounding terrain. The survival of multiple cairns across this upland field indicates a significant locus of burial activity and territorial significance during the prehistoric period, offering evidence of Bronze Age settlement patterns and land use in the Lake District uplands.
