Overview

History & significance

Raedykes is a Roman marching camp located approximately 600 metres north-east of South Raedykes in Kincardineshire, Scotland. The camp dates to the late first or early second century AD and forms part of the network of temporary fortifications associated with Roman military campaigns in northern Britain, particularly those undertaken during the governorships of Agricola or his successors. The site preserves the characteristic features of a Roman marching camp, including defensive ditches and ramparts arranged in the typical playing-card layout, though its remains are now largely visible as earthwork features and soil markings. Its position in north-east Scotland reflects the extent of Roman military penetration into the Grampian region during the early Imperial period.
