Overview

History & significance

Rhives is a Neolithic chambered cairn located in Sutherland in the far north of Scotland, situated approximately 320 metres north-north-east of Rhives itself. The monument belongs to the chambered cairn tradition of Neolithic Scotland, dating to the period roughly between 4000 and 3000 BCE, when such structures served as communal burial places for local populations. Like other cairns of this type, it would originally have comprised a stone-built chamber accessed by a passage, all contained within a mound of stone, though its current condition reflects the effects of considerable time and possible disturbance.
