The Sweet Track and Post Track is a Neolithic timber trackway located in the Somerset Levels near Sunnyside Farm. These parallel wooden tracks date to around 3,800 BCE and represent some of the earliest known engineered pathways in Britain, constructed using sophisticated joinery techniques to traverse the waterlogged fenland environment. The Sweet Track comprises a line of wooden pegs driven into the peat with carefully fitted rails, while the Post Track consists of a series of wooden posts, demonstrating distinct constructional approaches to achieving stable passage across marshy ground. These monuments are nationally important for their preservation of organic remains and their evidence of Neolithic woodland management, subsistence patterns, and technological capability in prehistoric Britain.
