Sections of the Sweet Track and Post Track, located 650 metres east of Canada Farm in Somerset, is an ancient monument comprising remains of two Neolithic trackways preserved in waterlogged conditions. The Sweet Track, one of Britain's earliest known engineered pathways, dates to approximately 3806 BCE and consists of a timber construction laid across wetland, whilst the Post Track is a later contemporary or slightly subsequent wooden structure. Both trackways are preserved as submerged archaeological deposits within peat and silt layers, where anaerobic conditions have enabled exceptional preservation of organic remains including wood, plant material, and artefactual evidence. The trackways represent significant evidence of early Neolithic settlement patterns and technological sophistication in managing the Somerset Levels wetland landscape during the fourth millennium BCE.
