Shieling at Southernknowe, 530 metres south-south-east of Whitehall, is a scheduled ancient monument representing pastoral land use in the upland regions of Northumberland. The site comprises the remains of a temporary or seasonal shelter associated with transhumance practices, whereby livestock herds were moved to higher pastures during summer months. Dating to the medieval period or later, the shieling reflects the economic organisation of upland farming communities in northern England. The physical remains consist of structural traces typical of such pastoral settlements, which served as functional bases for herders managing sheep or cattle on the moorland landscape.
