Stanhope is an unenclosed platform settlement located in Peeblesshire, south-west Scotland, situated 850 metres south-west of the settlement of Stanhope itself. The site sits on bedrock of the Gala Group, a formation of Telychian wacke that underlies much of this part of the Southern Uplands. This underlying geology would have influenced both the drainage and workability of the landscape for its prehistoric inhabitants.
Unenclosed platform settlements represent a distinct settlement type found across upland Scotland, typically dating to the Bronze Age and Iron Age periods.
