Tute Hill motte is a Norman motte-and-bailey castle located in Cumberland, England. The monument consists of a substantial earthen mound characteristic of early medieval fortifications constructed during the Norman period following the conquest of northern England. The site demonstrates the typical form of motte-and-bailey defence architecture, with the elevated mound designed to support a wooden palisade and tower structure from which the surrounding territory could be surveyed and controlled. Such fortifications were instrumental in establishing Norman authority across the northern counties during the eleventh and twelfth centuries.
