Unenclosed settlement, part of a field system, Romano-British aggregate village and group of shielings, 470m south east of Whitehall, is a complex of archaeological remains spanning multiple periods of occupation in Northumberland. The site comprises Romano-British settlement features alongside later medieval and post-medieval structures, including shielings which are characteristic temporary pastoral shelters used during seasonal transhumance. The physical remains include unenclosed settlement platforms, associated field boundaries, and scattered structural evidence indicative of repeated use and reuse of the landscape across several centuries. This palimpsest of activity reflects the long continuity of settlement and land use in the upland margins of northern England from the Romano-British period through the early modern era.
