Overview

History & significance

Valle Crucis Abbey is a Cistercian abbey founded in 1201 in the valley of the River Dee near Llangollen in Denbighshire, Wales. The abbey was established under the patronage of Madoc ap Gruffudd, Prince of Gwynedd, and became one of the most important Cistercian houses in North Wales, flourishing throughout the medieval period until its dissolution in 1536. The surviving remains include the substantially intact abbey church with its characteristic pointed arches and ribbed vaults, domestic buildings arranged around the cloister, and the distinctive early fourteenth-century gatehouse tower which still stands prominent within the valley landscape. The site exemplifies the architectural and spiritual ambitions of the Welsh Cistercian order, with its carefully planned layout following monastic conventions and its strategic location chosen for access to good agricultural land and water resources.
