Overview

History & significance

Wilton Castle is a Norman motte-and-bailey fortification located near Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire. The castle consists of a substantial earthwork mound surrounded by a bailey, typical of early Norman defensive architecture erected following the Conquest of 1066. The site represents an important example of 11th-century military engineering designed to establish Norman control over the Welsh borderlands. Though the castle does not survive in masonry form, the earthwork remains substantially preserved and demonstrates the strategic importance of this frontier region during the medieval period.
