Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork constructed during the reign of King Offa of Mercia in the late eighth century, forming a substantial frontier barrier between the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and the Welsh kingdoms to the west. This section of the monument, located near Stowfield Farm in Gloucestershire, comprises a substantial bank and ditch aligned roughly north-south and represents part of the longer dyke that extends intermittently for approximately eighty miles along the England-Wales border. The earthwork at this location survives as a prominent topographical feature, standing several metres in height, and remains one of the most significant examples of early medieval boundary construction in Britain. The dyke testifies to eighth-century territorial ambitions and engineering capability, though debate continues among scholars regarding the precise chronology of its construction and the extent to which it was completed as originally conceived.
