Overview

History & context

Milecastle 21 (Down Hill) is a milecastle on Hadrian's Wall, situated between Halton Chesters and Rudchester forts in Northumberland, roughly one Roman mile west of Milecastle 20 (Halton Shields). Built in the 120s AD as part of Hadrian's original wall scheme, it would have housed a small detachment (perhaps 8–32 men) controlling movement through the Wall and was likely occupied, with interruptions, into the late 4th century.

Significance

Historical significance

As one of the regularly spaced fortlets along the Wall, its primary function was the policing of cross-frontier traffic and the surveillance of the broad, open landscape between the North Tyne and the Tyne Gap. It is unremarkable individually but contributes to the systematic frontier control that defines Hadrian's Wall as a monument.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

The site has seen no significant modern excavation; its position is known largely from surface traces and from MacLauchlan's 19th-century survey, and the structure is presumed to be of the standard short-axis or long-axis plan typical of this Wall sector, though its precise gateway type is unconfirmed. No notable finds assemblage is published for this milecastle specifically.
