Overview

History & context

Miskin is the site of a Roman auxiliary fort in the Vale of Glamorgan, south Wales, occupied during the early Flavian period (c. 70–85 CE) as part of the Roman conquest and consolidation of the Silures. It lay on or near the line of the main east–west road through south Wales connecting Isca (Caerleon) westward toward Neath and Carmarthen, and would have been a typical turf-and-timber marching or garrison fort of modest auxiliary size.

Significance

Historical significance

The fort formed one link in the Flavian network of garrisons imposed across Silurian territory following Frontinus's campaigns, helping to control the lowland corridor between the legionary fortress at Caerleon and the forts further west at Cardiff, Cowbridge, and Neath. Its short occupation reflects the rapid pacification of the region and the subsequent thinning of the Welsh garrison after the 80s.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

The site is known principally from cropmarks and limited investigation rather than extensive excavation, with evidence pointing to a single-period Flavian fort; published structural detail, internal buildings, and finds assemblages are sparse. As with several comparable south Welsh forts (e.g. Cowbridge, Pen-y-Coedcae), the lack of stone rebuilding has limited surface visibility, and much of what is suspected about its plan derives from aerial photography.
