Roper Castle is a small Roman watch tower or signal station situated on the eastern flank of Moudy Mea in the northern Pennines, commanding views over the upper Eden valley and the trans-Pennine corridor towards Stainmore. It is one of a chain of fortlets and signal posts associated with the Stainmore route (the Roman road from Scotch Corner to Brougham), most likely active from the later 1st through the 4th century AD, though the precise dating of this individual post is uncertain.

The site forms part of the signalling and surveillance network securing the Stainmore Pass, which linked the legionary base at York with the western forts at Brougham, Kirkby Thore and Carlisle, and was strategically vital for moving troops and supplies across the Pennines. Its position relates it functionally to nearby sites such as Bowes Moor, Maiden Castle (Stainmore), and Rey Cross.
The visible remains comprise a small turf and stone enclosure with traces of an internal tower platform, typical of Pennine signal stations, but no modern excavation has been published and finds are essentially absent from the record. Knowledge of the site rests largely on earthwork survey rather than stratified evidence, so its construction date, garrison and period of use remain unresolved.
