Overview

History & context

Stretton Mill is a Roman auxiliary fort situated immediately north of Watling Street in Staffordshire, between the known forts at Pennocrucium (Water Eaton) and Wall (Letocetum). It is part of the dense early military complex around Pennocrucium and likely belongs to the conquest and consolidation phase of the mid-to-later 1st century AD, when Watling Street formed the principal military axis into the West Midlands and Wales.

Significance

Historical significance

The site forms one element of a remarkable cluster of Roman military installations (forts, marching camps and vexillation fortresses) flanking Watling Street near Pennocrucium, reflecting the strategic importance of this corridor during the campaigns against the Cornovii, Deceangli and Ordovices. Such concentration of temporary and semi-permanent works makes the Pennocrucium area one of the most important early Roman military landscapes in central Britain.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

The fort is known primarily from aerial photography, which has revealed its rectilinear ditched defences and associated cropmarks; little, if any, controlled excavation has been published, so its internal layout, garrison and precise period of occupation remain undetermined. Its identification as auxiliary in scale rests on its plotted dimensions relative to the neighbouring camps and the larger vexillation fortress at Pennocrucium.
