Overview

History & context

Turret 44B, known as Mucklebank, is a Hadrian's Wall turret occupying a dramatic position on the crest of Mucklebank Crag between Milecastle 44 (Allolee) and Milecastle 45 (Walltown), in the central sector of the Wall west of Housesteads. Built in the 120s AD as part of the original Wall scheme, it functioned as a small observation and signalling post manned by a detachment from one of the nearby garrisons, probably the auxiliary unit at Great Chesters (Aesica). It was likely occupied, with interruptions, into the later 4th century alongside the Wall as a whole.

The turret is also notable as one of the more impressively sited and well-preserved examples of its class.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

The turret was excavated by John Gibson in 1892, revealing a standard recessed turret plan with walls surviving several courses high, a hearth, and finds including pottery and a coin sequence suggesting occupation into the 4th century.
