Turret 49B is one of the standard interval watchtowers on Hadrian's Wall, positioned between Milecastle 49 (Harrows Scar) and Milecastle 50 (High House) in the Birdoswald sector, immediately west of the fort of Banna (Birdoswald). Like other Wall turrets, it was built in the 120s AD under Hadrian and would have functioned as an observation and signalling post, manned by detachments from the nearby fort; turrets in this sector are notable for being built in stone from the outset, unlike those further east on the original Turf Wall.

Its position on the high ground above the River Irthing gorge gave it a commanding view westward across the Turf Wall sector and into the Solway plain, making it part of the signalling chain linking Birdoswald to the western frontier installations. Like neighbouring Turret 49A (Birdoswald Buttress), it occupies the transitional zone where the stone Wall replaced the original Turf Wall, giving the sector particular structural interest.
Comparatively little has been published on 49B specifically; it has not seen the detailed modern excavation accorded to Turret 49A or to the nearby milecastles, and its remains are not prominently displayed. Based on regional parallels (e.g. Turrets 48A, 48B, 49A), it would have been a roughly 4–5 m square stone tower bonded into the Wall curtain, likely abandoned or reduced in
