Overview

History & context

Turret 57A (Beck) was one of the small recessed stone watch towers built into the curtain of Hadrian's Wall, positioned between Milecastles 57 (Cambeckhill) and 58 (Newtown) in the western sector of the Wall in Cumbria. Like other turrets on the Wall, it would have been constructed in the 120s AD under Hadrian and occupied intermittently into the later 2nd or possibly 3rd century, serving as an observation and signalling post for a small detachment from one of the auxiliary garrisons on the Wall.

Significance

Historical significance

Its role was primarily one of surveillance and communication along this relatively low-lying stretch west of the Irthing valley, maintaining the regular ⅓-mile spacing of turrets between milecastles and providing visual linkage in a landscape lacking the dramatic ridgelines of the central sector. The site has no recorded distinction beyond its place in this systematic frontier scheme.
