Overview

History & context

Turret 74B was one of the standard recessed stone turrets built into the curtain of Hadrian's Wall in the 120s AD, located in the western sector beyond Bowness-on-Solway towards the Cumbrian coast. At this point the Wall itself had effectively terminated at Bowness (Milecastle 80), and the system continued southwards along the Solway shore as a chain of free-standing milefortlets and towers without a linking curtain; Turret 74B would therefore have been a detached signal/observation post rather than a wall-integrated turret in the strict sense.

Significance

Historical significance

Its role was to extend surveillance of the Solway Firth's tidal flats, which were fordable at low water and represented a flank that could be turned by raiders bypassing the Wall's western terminus. Along with the milefortlets and other towers of the Cumbrian coast system, it formed part of Hadrian's broader frontier scheme rather than a purely linear barrier.
