Arthur Samuel was born in Emporia, Kansas, on December 5, 1901, and died on July 29, 1990. A computer scientist and artificial intelligence researcher, he coined the term "machine learning" in 1959. His Checkers-playing Program was among the world's first self-learning programs and an early demonstration of artificial intelligence concepts. Samuel was a senior member in the TeX community and wrote an early TeX manual in 1983.
