Biography

Charles Jencks was born in Baltimore in 1939 and worked as an architectural theorist, critic, designer, landscape architect, and historian. He published over thirty books and became known in the 1980s for theoretical work on postmodernism. Jencks designed built works including his own residence, The Cosmic House, and created landscapes in Scotland such as the Garden of Cosmic Speculation and earthworks at Jupiter Artland near Edinburgh. He co-founded the Maggie's Cancer Care Centres and completed the Crawick Multiverse, a commissioned project near Sanquhar that opened in 2015. He died in 2019.
