Biography

Elliott Coues was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1842 and died in 1899. He worked as an army surgeon, historian, ornithologist, and author, and also conducted meteorological observations and scientific collecting. Coues led surveys of the Arizona Territory and served as secretary of the United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories. He founded the American Ornithological Union in 1883 and edited its publication, The Auk.
