Hattie Caraway was born on February 1, 1878, in Bakerville, Tennessee. She worked as a teacher and politician, serving as United States Senator from Arkansas between 1931 and 1945. She was the first woman elected to the Senate, the first to serve a full term, and the first to be reelected to the Senate. She also presided over the Senate, becoming the first woman to do so. She died on December 21, 1950.
