Johns Hopkins was born in Gambrills, Maryland in 1795 and died in 1873. He worked as a merchant and investor, and gave money to establish Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital. At the time of his death, his donation was the largest philanthropic bequest ever made to an American educational institution.
