Koko Taylor was born in Memphis, Tennessee on September 28, 1928, and died on June 3, 2009. A musician, singer, and composer, she performed in Chicago blues, electric blues, rhythm and blues, and soul blues. She received 11 Grammy Award nominations and won in 1985 for Best Traditional Blues Album for her appearance on Blues Explosion.
