Leonard Wood was born in Winchester, New Hampshire in 1860 and died in 1927. He served as a physician and army surgeon before becoming a military officer, eventually reaching the rank of major general. Wood received the Medal of Honor during his early military service on the frontier. He commanded the Rough Riders during the Spanish–American War, with Theodore Roosevelt serving under him. His government posts included Chief of Staff of the United States Army, Military Governor of Cuba, and Governor-General of the Philippines. He was a candidate for the 1920 presidential nomination and led the Republican Party during that period.
