Leslie Alvin White was born in Salida, Colorado, on January 19, 1900, and died on March 31, 1975. An anthropologist, he advocated theories of cultural evolution, sociocultural evolution, and neoevolutionism, and helped establish the department of anthropology at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. He served as president of the American Anthropological Association in 1964.
