Margaret Keane was an American painter born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1927. She created paintings predominantly depicting women, children, or animals, characterised by large eyes, working in oil and mixed media. Her work achieved commercial success through reproductions on prints, plates, and cups. Initially credited to her then-husband Walter Keane, the attribution was disputed after their divorce in the 1960s, when Margaret claimed authorship. A courtroom "paint-off" in Hawaii was arranged to settle the dispute, which Walter Keane declined to participate in. She died in 2022.
