Biography

Margaret Taylor was born in Calvert County, Maryland, in 1788 and served as First Lady of the United States from 1849 to 1850. She married Zachary Taylor in 1810 and spent much of her married life accompanying him to military postings on the American frontier. The couple had six children, two of whom died in childhood; the surviving four were enrolled in boarding schools in the eastern United States. After her husband's election to the presidency in 1848, Taylor managed the White House residence while delegating her duties as White House hostess to her daughter, and she remained highly reclusive during her tenure as First Lady. Her husband's death in 1850 ended her time in that role, and she lived in obscurity until her death in 1852.
