Nikki Giovanni was born in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1943 and worked as a poet, writer, teacher, pedagogue and civil rights advocate. Her output included poetry anthologies, poetry recordings, and nonfiction essays addressing race, social issues, and children's literature. She received the Langston Hughes Medal and the NAACP Image Award, and was nominated for a 2004 Grammy Award for her poetry album The Nikki Giovanni Poetry Collection. She died on December 9, 2024.
