Raymond A. Spruance was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1886 and died in 1969. During World War II, he served as a United States Navy admiral and commanded U.S. naval forces at the Battle of the Philippine Sea. He also commanded Task Force 16 at the Battle of Midway, which comprised the carriers Enterprise and Hornet; dive bombers from American carriers at Midway sank four fleet carriers of the Imperial Japanese Navy.
